For special purposes, other active elements have been used. For example, in the early days of the satellite communication, parametric amplifiers were used. The core circuit was a diode whose capacitance was changed by an RF signal created locally. Under certain conditions, this RF signal provided energy that was modulated by the extremely weak satellite signal received at the earth station. This is commonly caused by the FM signals being bounced off objects or hillsides and reaching your radio by different paths. Its technical name is multipath distortion. It is often worst in hilly or heavily built-up areas. Indoor portables are especially susceptible. Let's get the negatives out of the way first, though. There's no USB input or Bluetooth connectivity, which some users might demand. That aside, the PM6007 is pretty much faultless.

Some hi-fi’s have external AM aerials that tend to look like many wires wound around a plastic loop. This needs to be rotated to find the best signal. Power amplifier circuits (output stages) are classified as A, B, AB and C for analog designs—and class D and E for switching designs. The power amplifier classes are based on the proportion of each input cycle (conduction angle) during which an amplifying device passes current. [35] The image of the conduction angle derives from amplifying a sinusoidal signal. If the device is always on, the conducting angle is 360°. If it is on for only half of each cycle, the angle is 180°. The angle of flow is closely related to the amplifier power efficiency. If you have an external aerial, a radio signal will always lose some of its strength as it passes along the cable and through the connectors. It is important to minimise the loss by using good quality cable and connectors.
Most FM car radios have a Radio Data System (RDS) built in. Flying Moles were used in, amongst others, PMC’s older passive speaker designs, and although they’re no longer available new, they’d be worth auditioning if you can find a used set — though they seem to come up for sale relatively rarely. Telescopic aerials on portable radios should be fully extended to receive a good signal. Tilting and swivelling the aerial will help to get the best signal. Broken aerials may affect reception.
Most amplifiers are designed to be linear. That is, they provide constant gain for any normal input level and output signal. If an amplifier's gain is not linear, the output signal can become distorted. There are, however, cases where variable gain is useful. Certain signal processing applications use exponential gain amplifiers. [5] Obstructions between the aerial and transmitter can cause problems. Trees are the most common obstructions. They can affect the signal. This can be greater at different times of the year (when there are more leaves), when wet or in high winds. The transformer-coupled design is rather basic but it has worked perfectly in it's lo-fi way since I fixed it in about 1990, during which time it has travelled far and wide, been shorted and overdriven once or twice, but not lost a transistor. The simplistic global NFB goes a bit funny on the approach to DC - the damping runs out at a couple of Hz. If you input a single pulse you can watch the speaker cone wobble gently in and out for a few seconds afterwards.
